The Stockport Liberal Democrats have taken their fight to save Stepping Hill Hospital directly to the heart of Government, handing in a petition with over 6,000 signatures at 10 Downing Street.

The petition, backed by residents across Stockport Borough, calls for urgent investment in Stepping Hill Hospital, which is facing a repair backlog of £134million. Despite recent improvements to A&E and outpatient areas, many buildings on the site remain outdated or unsafe, with parts already condemned.

Local NHS leaders have also been ordered to find £41 million in savings this year alone – raising serious concerns about the future of services. The petition was delivered by Cheadle MP Tom Morrison, Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart, and Stockport Council Leader Mark Roberts (pictured).

Alice Delemare, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Stockport, said: “Stepping Hill Hospital is the heart of our community, and 6,000 signatures show just how much residents care about its future. The £134 million repair backlog and the pressure to make cuts are completely unacceptable. Our NHS staff and patients deserve better, and I'll keep fighting alongside our team until this Government delivers the investment Stepping Hill desperately needs.”

The Stockport Lib Dem team has pledged to keep up the pressure on the Government to take urgent action and ensure Stepping Hill has a long-term future.

The Stockport Lib Dems say the petition shows the strength of local feeling – and that residents won't accept cuts to vital health services. The campaign continues, and the Lib Dem team will keep fighting until the hospital gets the funding it needs.
