Alice Delemare Elected as Councillor for Davenport and Cale Green
Alice Delemare has been elected as the new Liberal Democrat councillor for Davenport and Cale Green, gaining the seat from Labour in one of the most closely watched contests of the night. Voters across Adswood, Cale Green, Davenport and Shaw Heath backed Alice to be their voice at Stockport Council, delivering a historic result for the local Liberal Democrats.
The victory was part of an extraordinary night for the Liberal Democrats across Stockport, with the party winning six of its seven target wards and taking majority control of Stockport Council for the first time in 14 years. The Lib Dems now hold 33 seats on the council, giving them the majority they need to drive forward their agenda for the borough.
Alice, who has spent over 15 years campaigning on social and environmental justice, fought the election on the issues she heard about most on the doorstep: better local services, safer streets, action on the cost of living, and making sure Davenport and Cale Green has a strong, active voice at the council. She has already been leading campaigns to secure step-free access at Davenport Station and a safe pedestrian crossing on Garners Lane.
Speaking after her election, Alice said: "I am so grateful to everyone who placed their trust in me tonight. Whether you voted for me or not, I am here to work for every resident in Adswood, Cale Green, Davenport and Shaw Heath. I want to say a huge thank you to outgoing councillor Wendy Wild for her service to this community, and I am ready to get straight to work."
